This album is just an overview of his career and the first half is weak. The sound is way more Pop-y than Reggae. Think of UB40, but slightly less cheesy. The first couple of tracks the verses are lost in the wash of repeated choruses. The Reggae guitar is still in the background, but is hidden by the horn, keyboard and drum section. The track “Reggae Night” is sounds like something you would hear in a swap meet in Sun Valley. The cover of Johnny Nash “I Can See Clearly Now” off the Cool Runnings soundtrack adds nothing to the original. However, the song “You Can Get It If You Really Want” from The Harder They Come is the highlight of the album.
The second half of the album is much stronger than the first half. “Roots Radical” has a laid back groove supported by the bass. Folksy “Sitting In Limbo” rivals the classic “Sitting on the Dock Of the Bay” with lyrics that go:
“Sitting here in Limbo
Waiting for the tide turn.
Yeah, now, sitting here in Limbo,
So many things I’ve got to learn.
Meanwhile, they’re putting up a resistance,
But I know that my faith will lead me on.”
